Christmas Calorie Counting

We all like to indulge over the Christmas holidays, and for those of us trying to get fit or stay fit, this time of year is full of temptations that tinder our progress. Here’s a little insight into how many calories are in each part of your Christmas treats…

  • Quality Street Chocolate (serving- 3 chocolates) – estimated 132 calories
  • Glass of Champagne 120ml – estimated 90 calories
  • Mulled Wine 105ml – estimated 106 calories
  • Mince Pie – estimated 230 calories
  • Cheese (30g serving) – estimated 120 calories

So that’s some of the things you may be consuming before and after the main event. The Christmas Dinner! Obviously this depends on what you have, and how you cook it etc, but the average British Christmas main course will be 1500 calories, and this is before the Christmas pudding, coming in at 340 calories for around 115g, and if you have just two tablespoons of brandy sauce is an extra 250 calories on top.

Surveys report that over the course of the big day the average person will consume up to 7000 calories! Being in mind our recommended daily calorie intake is around 2000 for women and 2500 for men.


Ok, now the depressing part… what you have to do in the gym to work off the Christmas calories.

For a 70kg person…

30 minutes of…

  • Running at 7.5 mph (an 8minute mile) 460 calories
  • Swimming breaststroke 370 calories
  • Rowing 150 watts (vigorous effort) 315 calories
  • Stationary bike 200 watts (vigorous effort) 390 calories
  • Circuit training (resistance exercises with some aerobic moves, minimal rest)

295 calories

  • Weight lifting (free weight, vigorous effort) 225 calories


Bear in mind all these figures are generalised and will vary person to person. Also these figures are calories burned during your gym session only. Your metabolism will be raised for a few hours after your session meaning you will burn more calories in general throughout the day compared to if you didn’t workout. Also weight training has the long term benefit of building muscle. The more muscle mass you have, the more mass you have burning calories at any given time. So a body builder compared to an average person will burn more calories at rest.

So I’m not saying skip the Christmas pudding, we all enjoy indulging every now and again, but now you have some idea of the lengths you have to go to to get back on track. So see you in January!
